The movie describes a man's whole life, whose name is Jean Valjean. He was caught because of stealing a piece of bread and failing to escape from the jail. After 19 years, he was finally released on parole. He has no dreams, no place to go and no money. In a cold night, he was rescued by a bishop, providing him food and drinks. But Jean stole the silver in the Church and was caught when he was trying to escape. Fortunately, the bishop rescued him by telling the officers that slivers were gifts. Jean became owner of a factory and mayor of a city 8 years later. He met Fantine, who used to be a worker in his factory. Fantine was fired and she was unable to take care of her daughter, Cosette. Jean promised to take care of Cosette when he was looking after Fantine in the hospital. And as he promised, he treated Cosette as his daughter after the death of Fantine.
In all these years, Jean was chased by a police, Javert, who swore to put Jean back to the jail. Javert thought Jean should spent his whole life in the prison because of what he had done. He was a criminal, did not obey the law. Javert had never thought of giving up. But during the October Revolution, Jean chose to release Javert even though he had a chance to kill him. And Javert found that Jean was not the criminal he knew, he tried his best to save Marius and his daughter, ignoring his own safety. What Javert has believed for years suddenly collapsed, under such shock, Javert chose to end his life.

Another main theme in the movie should be the revolution took place in Paris in 1832. Hundreds of teenagers came out and opposed the government. Through the revolution, they hoped to get freedom and democracy, raising the public's concern on the country they were living in. Unfortunately, the revolution did not success, only a few of the participants were able to survive, including Marius.
